Heads up: Nineteen minutes each way is a real walk twice over. If that is the tradeoff you are making to avoid a queue, the Yellow Zone shuttle lots are the better answer.

Iron Dukes permits come from the Iron Dukes office on 919-613-7575, and those lots open at 6 a.m. on a Saturday, earlier than any public zone. Permits are valid only for the specific game printed on them and must be shown on entry and on request inside the lot.
Heads up: Two rules people try to get around and cannot: permits may not be duplicated, and they cannot be combined to park an RV or oversized vehicle outside its designated lot or to claim extra tailgate space. In an overflow, the attendant decides where you go.

C1 bus from East Campus
FreeDuke regulars also suggest parking in a residential street near East Campus and riding the C1 across to West Campus, describing the C1 as a core Duke experience in its own right. With free parking already available on the stadium side, this is now a preference rather than a saving.

Getting out after
The courtesy shuttle runs until an hour after the game, with the queue at Duke Chapel rather than at the stadium. Duke publishes separate pregame and postgame maps, and the postgame one exists because the routes are not simply reversed. Nobody in the fan threads we read raised getting out as a problem, which at almost every other school in this set was the first complaint mentioned.
Tailgating rules
Tailgating happens in the lots, split between a student section run by fraternities and other campus organisations and tents run by alumni and fans. Iron Duke permits specifically cannot be combined to claim extra tailgate space, which tells you how tightly the close-in lots are managed.
One Duke fan's description, offered to a first-time visitor who had been to a Stanford tailgate, was that it is about that level of energy minus the wine, with a southern accent. Another said plainly that the gameday experience is much tamer than other colleges and basketball will always rule over football here. We could not find Duke's published rules on grills, alcohol or generators, and we are not going to guess at them.
