Sanford Stadium sits in the middle of campus with downtown Athens at one end and the rest of the university wrapped around it, so parking here is a question of which side you approach from. UGA sells its football parking as season passes through ParkMobile at $280 for a deck, which works out to $40 a game, and they go first come first served and sell out. The realistic visitor plan is a downtown deck or the East Campus Deck with the free stadium shuttle. The rule that catches people is not a parking rule at all: you can drink at your tailgate on campus, but Athens-Clarke County bans open containers on county streets and sidewalks and enforces it, and 17 county streets run straight through campus.

The two city decks put you at the top of North Campus, which is a walk down through the prettiest part of the university to the stadium rather than a hike across parking lots. First come first served, no reservation. Downtown Athens is the pregame, so this is the option where the parking and the day out are the same decision.
Heads up: The Athens Downtown Development Authority's own gameday parking pages still describe the 2023 season at $40 cash only, and we could not find a current rate published anywhere official. Other sources say it has risen since. Bring cash, expect it to cost more than $40, and call 706-613-7978 if you need to know before you drive.

UGA opens overflow parking at the Intramural Fields for some games and runs shuttle service from there when it does. Whether it opens is decided game by game based on traffic flow. Heads up: Two things to know. Tailgating is not allowed in the Intramural Field area at all, so this is parking only. And after the game the buses cannot return directly to the Intramural Fields because of traffic, so they drop at an adjacent area instead and you walk the last stretch.

The lots ringing the stadium, Tate chief among them, go to Athletic Association donors and are allocated by giving level rather than sold. Fans describe the biggest donors getting the best lots with Tate as the top priority, and say passes for it are not sold to the public at all. This is the single fact that explains the whole parking map here, and no official page states it plainly.
Heads up: Passes do surface on the secondary market at prices fans describe as hundreds of dollars, which is a different product from the $40 a game the university charges its own pass holders. If a listing near the stadium looks cheap, look harder at what it actually is.

Athens is small enough that the walk is often the answer, and UGA runs a real shuttle rather than a token one. Between downtown at one end of campus and the East Campus Deck at the other, most visitors can avoid driving anywhere near the stadium.

Walking from downtown

When to get there
Two different clocks run on gameday. You may park in open university spaces before 7:00 a.m., but only if your tailgate gear stays in the vehicle and you stay quiet, and no tailgate setup at all is allowed before 7:00 a.m. Spaces managed by the Athletics Association open at 7:00 a.m. North Campus runs on its own clock and does not open for tailgating until five hours before kickoff, which for a noon kick is 7:00 a.m. anyway and for a night game is the middle of the afternoon. Downtown decks open at 8:00 a.m. Kickoff times are set about a week out by television, so the North Campus window in particular moves game to game.
Getting out after
The S Stadium Loop bus keeps running after the game until traffic normalizes, at least an hour, which makes the East Campus Deck the least stressful exit on this list. Downtown is the other easy one, because the walk back up through North Campus takes the same time regardless of how many cars are trying to leave, and you end up somewhere with food and a bathroom rather than in a queue. If you take the Intramural Fields overflow, know that the buses cannot get back to that lot directly after the game and will drop you nearby instead.
Tailgating rules
Tailgating is close to the reason people come, and UGA writes its rules accordingly. No setup before 7:00 a.m. Charcoal grills are allowed. Propane is not: tanks and compressed gas cylinders are banned outright for any purpose, including turkey fryers, low country boils, grills and portable heaters, with the single exception of disposable canisters of 17 ounces or less. If you have tailgated at a stadium where propane is the safe choice and charcoal is banned, Georgia is the exact inverse.
North Campus, the historic quad bounded by Broad, Lumpkin, Baldwin and Jackson streets including Herty Field, has its own stricter set: no kegs, no generators, no televisions, no amplified music, no grills or cookers of any kind, and no household furniture, though folding chairs are fine. Tents and tables may not be set up in parking spaces anywhere. You cannot plug into university power or cable, but you may bring your own generator outside North Campus. Corporate style tailgates are banned outright, which in practice means no private security, no bartenders since every tailgate must be self-serve, no alcohol or tobacco branding, and no wristbands or any other way of limiting access to public space. On alcohol, the trap for visitors: Athens-Clarke County ordinance 6-3-12 bans open containers on county streets and sidewalks and it is enforced, and 17 county streets run through campus.

UGA has posted a scam warning about text messages impersonating ParkMobile and asking for payment details. All payment happens inside the app, and the university says ParkMobile never sends payment links by SMS.
The site ugastadium.com ranks well for this search and reads like an official venue page. It is an independent guide linked to a ticket resale marketplace, by its own disclaimer, so we did not use its parking rules here.
If you hold a normal UGA parking permit, it does not cover you on a football Saturday. Fans put it bluntly in October 2025: Athletics takes over almost every lot on campus, and your assigned space stops being yours.
