Pittsburgh is famous for one parking move: park downtown cheap, ride the T across the river for free, and skip the stadium lots entirely. At a Steelers game that is the best value in the NFL. At a Pitt game it does not save you a dollar. Alco publishes a Pitt gameday rate card, and the North Shore Garage, which is at the stadium, is $25. The downtown garages we could price charge $26 to $30 for a stay that long, so the cheap seats are the ones next to the building. The trap runs the same direction: the Kamin Science Center lots are the most expensive at $50, they sit furthest out, they open an hour later than everything else, and they ban grilling. Older guides still call them the Carnegie Science Center lots and list them as the bargain, which is how you can tell those guides have not been rechecked since the building was renamed in 2025. We could not verify any free car parking for a Pitt game.

Alco publishes a four tier gameday rate card for Pitt football and the North Shore Garage sits at the bottom of it at $25, below the $30 general rate and below the $35 Gold Lots. It is a garage, so it is covered, which in Pittsburgh in November is worth something on its own. Once kickoff times are released, individual game parking is sold through JustPark.
Heads up: Garages are the one place Alco bans tailgating outright, and city authorities separately prohibit open flames and anything placed on a garage ledge. If the lot scene is the reason you came, this is the wrong $25.

Surface lots in this group allow moderate and responsible tailgating.
Heads up: Alco runs a Directed Parking Policy at every North Shore lot, meaning an attendant puts you in a specific space rather than letting you choose. Extra spaces are not sold at any price and tailgating has to stay inside the single space you paid for, so the plan of buying two spots to make room for a spread does not work here.

The Gold surface lots are the premium tier of Alco's Pitt rate card at $35, ten dollars above the North Shore Garage and five above the general lots. What the extra buys is a surface space at the closest point to the stadium, which matters only if you are tailgating, since a garage space the same distance away is cheaper.
Heads up: Gold 2 doubles as the Stage AE lot, so on a night when a concert overlaps a game the demand for it is not coming from football alone. Check whether anything else is on before assuming a walk up space exists.

This is the most expensive parking Alco sells for a Pitt game and it buys the worst deal on the North Shore. At $50 it is double the North Shore Garage, it is further from the stadium, and it opens an hour later than every other Alco facility.
Heads up: The Kamin lots carry restrictions no other lot here does: no tents, no grilling, no beer pong, no loitering, tailgating at your car only, and a $1,000 littering fine. Be careful reading older parking guides on this one. The building was the Carnegie Science Center until it was renamed the Kamin Science Center in 2025, and guides written before the change still list these as the cheap lot at $25 to $30. Alco's current rate card says $50.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit runs a Free Fare Zone covering light rail from the North Shore through downtown to First Avenue Station, taking in Gateway, Wood Street, Steel Plaza, North Side and Allegheny. Rides inside that zone are free at all times. Pitt itself points fans here, telling them North Shore parking is reserved and pre-sold and suggesting they park and ride instead. The catch is the parking half. Alco's downtown garages publish their own rates, and a game length stay runs $26 at the PPG Garage, $27 at 11 Stanwix Street and $30 at Market Square, so you are not undercutting the $25 North Shore Garage.
Heads up: Two things to check. Alco's Pitt rate card says the $30 gameday rate applies to all locations without defining where the North Shore ends, so confirm with the specific downtown garage whether you are paying its posted hourly rate or a flat event rate. And the Free Fare Zone is free only inside the zone, so boarding at a suburban station south of downtown means paying the regular $2.75 fare.

The North Shore sits directly across the Allegheny from downtown and the bridges between are among the most walkable in the city. If you have already parked downtown, this costs nothing beyond the garage and takes about as long as waiting for the T.
Heads up: The walk is free, the parking is not, and we are not going to file this under free parking on that basis. It is Pittsburgh in football season, so price in the weather for a December walk back at night.

Pitt sells advance football parking only on a season basis and only to football season ticket holders, at one pass per two season tickets up to four surface spaces. The published table is worth reading closely because the headline price is mostly not parking. Each rate is a pass fee plus a Scholarship Parking Membership fee, and the membership is where the money is: the Blue 10 Garage is $140 with no membership fee at all, while Gold 1A and the Stage AE Lot are $780, of which $500 is membership. Same season, same stadium, five and a half times the price. Most lots are marked sold out, but Blue 10 Garage, Red 5 Garage, Blue 7H and the Champions Garage were listed available with a gameday presale on JustPark.
Heads up: Passes stop being sold through the Panthers Ticket Office once the home opener is over, so this is a preseason decision or not one at all. Passes are electronic and pushed to season ticket holders around mid August. Pitt also states it may reassign parking in future years as North Shore development continues, with order set by Panther Club membership rank, so a lot you like this season is not guaranteed next.

There is a limited amount of accessible parking at every Alco location, with designated drop off points marked on the North Shore Parking Guide map. Heads up: Alco states plainly that it does not pre-sell accessible parking, so there is no way to reserve one on the day and arriving at the 5 hour opening is the only real strategy. Pitt asks that accessible parking questions go to the Panthers Ticket Office ahead of time rather than being sorted out on arrival.

The Pitt campus shuttle, which is for students
Free with a Pitt student IDPitt runs its own Acrisure Stadium shuttle for every home game, leaving University Place near Nordenberg Hall from 3.5 hours before kickoff through kickoff, dropping on Reedsdale Street near Gate C, with return service starting at halftime and running through the end of the game and students dropped at the bus shelter on Bigelow Blvd. Accessible transport for those unable to walk runs from outside the Soldiers and Sailors parking garage to the same Reedsdale Street point. Worth knowing precisely because it is the obvious answer to getting from Oakland to the North Shore and it is not open to you unless you are a student: Pitt's own page says a student ID is what lets you ride free, and every operational line on it refers to students.

Getting in from Oakland without a student ID
$2.75 for the bus, then free on the TThere is no light rail from Oakland, so the route for everyone else is a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus into downtown and then the T from Steel Plaza or Wood Street to North Side or Allegheny, which is inside the Free Fare Zone and costs nothing. You pay one fare for the bus leg. Confirm current routes and times with PRT rather than assuming, since Oakland bus service has been under reconstruction.

That the light rail does not serve Oakland is a matter of the published system map. Do not try to get a head start by queuing early: both Alco and Pitt state that vehicles may not sit in front of a lot entrance before opening, and Alco notes Pittsburgh police strictly enforce no waiting on the streets. The 2026 home schedule has two weeknight kickoffs, Syracuse on Thursday September 17 at 7:30 PM and Florida State on Friday November 13 at 7 PM, and those are the two dates where the park downtown plan is worst, because you are arriving into the evening commute while downtown garages still hold the day's cars.
Getting out after
This is the one place the downtown approach still wins outright. Everyone who parked on the North Shore funnels onto the same handful of bridges and ramps at once, while the T and the pedestrian bridges keep moving. If you did park at the stadium, note that Alco asks guests to be out of the lots no later than an hour after the event ends, so waiting out the traffic in your space is not the strategy it is at some stadiums. Wait it out somewhere on the North Shore instead.
Tailgating rules
Tailgating is allowed in the surface lots and banned in the garages, and it is smaller in scale than the Steelers scene at the same address, because Alco sells you exactly one space and expects the tailgate to fit in it. Extra spaces are not sold at any price and an attendant assigns where you park.
Two official sources disagree here and it is worth knowing before you load the car. Alco's tailgating policy, updated September 2025, accepts moderate and responsible tailgating in surface lots and bans tents only at the Kamin lots. Pitt's own tailgating guidelines are stricter across the board, listing no tents, beach umbrellas, portable toilets, limos, RVs or other oversized vehicles anywhere on the North Shore, and no open fires other than cooking grills. Both ban glass. Where they conflict, the lot operator is the one at the gate, but Pitt is the one selling most of the passes, so the safe read is Pitt's. If a tent matters to you, call before you buy. Acrisure Stadium is the rare venue where parking at the stadium undercuts parking away from it. The North Shore Garage is $25 on a Pitt gameday while the downtown Alco garages we could price charge $26 to $30 for a stay that long. What makes Pitt season parking expensive is mostly not the parking. Every season rate is a pass fee plus a Scholarship Parking Membership fee, and the Blue 10 Garage at $140 is the one facility carrying no membership fee at all, against $780 for Gold 1A and the Stage AE Lot.
Pitt does not sell single game parking through its ticket office and points fans to third party resellers instead, while Alco sells individual game parking through JustPark once kickoff times are set. Two different channels for the same lots, so compare both before buying.
Pitt's parking page was still carrying a Pitt versus Notre Dame parking advisory when we checked it in July 2026, warning that fewer than 500 North Shore spaces remained.
