Transfer portal

A college football term

A database, plus a right. A player who enters during an open window may be contacted by any school. Entering is not binding and needs no permission, but it can cost the player his scholarship.

It is easy to overstate what the portal is. It is an administrative list. What matters is the rule attached to it: once you are in it, other programs may talk to you.

Entry is only allowed during set windows, which is why the sport has a chaotic few weeks each winter rather than year-round movement.

A player can withdraw, but the current school is not obliged to keep the scholarship, so entering carries real risk.
