Waived vs released

Both mean a player was cut. Waived players go on the waiver wire first, where any team can claim them and take on their contract. Released players become free agents immediately and can sign anywhere.
Which one happens to you depends on how long you have been in the league. A player with fewer than four accrued seasons is waived. A vested veteran, meaning four or more accrued seasons, is released straight into free agency.
The practical difference is who decides where you go next. A waived player has no say: if a team claims him, he is on that team. A released veteran picks from whoever offers.
An accrued season means six or more games on the active roster, injured reserve or the physically unable to perform list.
You’ll hear it like this
He was waived rather than released, so the Steelers had to wait 24 hours to see if anyone claimed him.
